What Are IC Cards in Japan?
In Japan, IC cards are rechargeable transportation cards.
They work just like EZ-Link in Singapore.
You can use them for trains, buses, and even at convenience stores.

有名なカードは、Suica(東京)、PASMO(関東)、ICOCA(関西)などがあります。
Which IC Card Should You Use in Kyoto or Osaka?
If you’re staying in Kyoto or Osaka, the most recommended card is ICOCA.
You can also use Suica or PASMO here, because they all support nationwide compatibility.

Where to buy:
- JR stations (ticket machines)
- Kansai Airport stations
How to Use IC Cards on Trains and Buses
Just touch the card on the gate when entering and leaving the station.

No need to buy tickets every time.
Can You Use the Same Card in Tokyo and Kyoto?
Yes!
Most IC cards in Japan are “interoperable.”

But note:
- You can’t combine balances from different cards.
- You can’t use the same card for multiple people.
Where to Recharge IC Cards
You can recharge your IC card at:
- Train station ticket machines
- Convenience stores (like 7-Eleven)

Alternative Options for Tourists
If you’re visiting multiple cities or riding long distances,
Japan Rail Pass or Welcome Suica might be better options.
